Paint by Number je první studiové album vydané skupinou 3 v roce 1999 u Planet Noise Records. Bratr hlavního zpěváka Joey Epparda, Josh Eppard, který se později připojil ke skupině Coheed and Cambria, pomáhal contribute to the production toto album, and has not appeared on any of 3's studio albums since.

Note: The "hidden track" is actually track 33 on the CD, following tracks 14-32, which are silent and total approximately 1:34.
The song "Careless Kim" is sometimes referred to as "The Emerald Undertow" during live performances.

This is "3." Melody-driven acoustic/electric funk/punk with some of the darkest, deepest, funniest and most literate lyrics since the hey-day of that John guy from England (we don't mean Elton). If all this sounds like so much hype, stop reading right now and give "Paint By Number" a listen. From the radio-ready, highway anthem "Wrongside" to the brooding power ballad "Careless Kim" and the straight-ahead rocker "Paint By Number," this is an album, and a band, with infinite variety and no weak spots. Machine-gun drumming punctuates the hypnotic melody of "Leaving After All," emotive vocal histrionics inform the rhythmic throb of "Lay Down the Law," and check out "You Call Me Baby," "Blood on the Blankets," "Astroknot"... ok, you try to pick just one favorite. And don't overlook the strange, experimental hidden track (you deep thinkers will be able to figure out which number it is). Don't miss this amazing album!!

Nahoru You've Been Shot

You've been shot
Full of holes
You feel your eyes
About to close
And the clothes you're in
Seem paper thin
You feel the frostbite
Fangs sink in
'Cause it's cold outside
With no place to hide
Your blood out in the snow
And the people stare
But they're unaware
Of why you had to go

Well think of all the fun you've had
Breaking heads and acting bad
But now that all those days are done
You finally tried the other side
Of a gangster's gun

Paralyzed
But a pulse remains
To pump last thoughts
Through your dying brains
Remember Mom
Said always do your best
But now a bullet burns
Within your chest
And the sirens sound
Crowd gathers round
Like moths to flame will fly
'Cause they love blood's smell
But they're scared as hell
Of what it means to die

Well think of all the fun you've had
Breaking heads and acting bad
But now that all those days are done
You finally tried the other side
Of a gangster's gun

I smell something burning
Like a flag, like a rubber tire
What you kids been cooking
That's got my kitchen full of fire?
Well it's American stew
'Cause we were sick of the pie
Blood, white, and blue
In the blink of an eye
We'll go to the barn
And lay down low
And hide 'til all of the fires go

Well think of all the fun you've had
Breaking heads and acting bad
But now that all those days are done
You finally tried the other side
Of a gangster's gun

American stew
'Cause we were sick of the pie
Blood, white, and blue
In the blink of an eye
(You've been shot)
We'll go to the barn
And we'll lay down low
And hide 'til all of the fires go

(You've been shot)
American stew
'Cause we were sick of the pie
Blood, white, and blue
In the blink of an eye
(You've been shot)
We'll go to the barn
And we'll lay down low
And hide 'til all of the fires go

(Oh, you've been shot)
American stew
'Cause we were sick of the pie
Blood, white, and blue
In the blink of an eye
(Oh, you've been shot)
We'll go to the barn
And we'll lay down low
And hide 'til all of the fires go

Nahoru Leaving After All

Behind her smile
She licks the blood off of her teeth
And says she'll stay
Because it's easier that way
Way
And I've had enough
So shut me down or just shut up
I'm sick of hearing your confessions
(Confessions)
I'm sick of cleaning up your messes
(Messes)
If that's the way you are
Then that's the way I'm gonna be
If that's the way you are
You are just wasting away

I'm sinking and thinking
I'll override this (undertow)
Have I been
Relying
Too much on you to stay afloat?
Your funny face
You're leaned against the wall
I can't believe it's true
That you're not you
And you're leaving after all

Time is a bus
That drives itself through all of us
We sag and drag in funny places
(Places)
When traffic's heavy on our faces
(Faces)
If that's the way you are
Then that's the way I'm gonna be
If that's the way you are
You are just wasting away

I'm sinking and thinking
I'll override this (undertow)
Have I been
Relying
Too much on you to stay afloat?
Your funny face
You're leaned against the wall
I can't believe it's true
That you're not you
And you're leaving after all

You say, "I'll stay the same
If you'll just trust"
From me to you and rust to dust
But I watch you walking day to day
Pick up some change along the way
The way
If that's the way you are
Then that's the way I'm gonna be
If that's the way you are
You are just wasting away

(If that's the way)
I can't believe it's true
(The way)
I found out that you're not you
(The way)
You said you'd stay, yes I recall
(You are just wasting)
Oh
(Away)
I can't believe it's true
I found out that you're not youv You said you'd stay, yes I recallv But you're leaving after all

Nahoru Wrongside

Driving Alexis all of the way home
She's like a child
Except that she is grown
If we cannot find the yellow lines
How then can we know
When we're driving on
The wrong side of the road?
Wrong side of the road
Welcome to what you have bought
I'd like to thank you, thank you a lot
For hanging up on words and on walls
And taking these calls
So do you have what it takes?
To drive in the city
You better slam on your brakes
You better step on the gas
You better not come in last
Oh but you can't go too fast

Driving Alexis all of the way home
She's like a child
Except that she is grown
If we can't find the yellow lines
How then can we know
If we're driving on
The wrong side of the road?
Wrong side of the road

We hit, we run, and we spill
Poor little freedom
We're bleeding him still
Get on the bandwagon
Or end up road kill
There's no free will

Driving Alexis all of the way home
She's like a child
Except that she is grown
If we cannot find the yellow lines
How then can we know
When we're driving on
The wrong side of the road?
Wrong side of the road

I took a long drive just for you
What else can I do
But hope one day
The truth will see me through?
I hardly believe it hurts so badly
Oh Bradley, for you to say
What you think we should do
Wrong side of the road

Driving Alexis all of the way home
We're just like children
Except that we are grown
If we cannot find the yellow lines
How then can we know
When we're driving on
The wrong side of the road?
Wrong side of the road
Wrong side of the road
Wrong side of the road
Wrong side of the road

Nahoru Lay Down the Law

This song is not about you
It's not about me
It's about the blood and the blade
Stabbed into the back of somebody
Somebody is someone who is stable
But still remains unable to really be himself
Cause if he were he
Then she would still be with somebody
And not someone else
Someone else...
This song is not about me
And the battles that I've won
It's about the warped kitchen floor
From the water left on to run
And the pile of dirty dishes
That is never done
And the ashes in the sink
Floating in the water
Somebody doesn't wanna have to
But somebody ought to

Lay down the law, don't change your style
Lead on to leave
Baby, come on back for a while
Lay down the law, don't change your style
Lead on to leave
Baby, come on back for a while
For a while...

This song is a survey of scenes somebody sees
Masked with melodies
There's no way to let go, no way to forget
That there's nowhere to grow
Just the room to regret
Where she holds him back confined to a space
But she holds somebody in the first place

Lay down the law, don't change your style
Lead on to leave
Baby, come on back for a while
Lay down the law, don't change your style
Lead on to leave
Baby, come on back for a while
For a while...

Somebody is stranded light years from home
On a planet where people
Are not like his own
Where they pay to be brainwashed
And told what to see
And not many dare question authority
Where a sick television is coughing up blood
And it stains every life and it's starting to flood
Fills the holes in our brains
As it pours from the screens
And it stains the newspapers and the magazines

Lay down the law, don't change your style
Lead on to leave
Baby, come on back for a while
Lay down the law, don't change your style
Lead on to leave
Baby, come on back for a while

Lay down the law
Lay down the law
Don't change your style
Don't change
Lay down the law
Lay down the law
Lay down the law

Nahoru Paint By Number

Do what you want me to do
Say what you want me to say
I smile when you give me the cue
I'll play like you want me to play
Don't give up, it's a quarter past Three
I'm just scared I'll die before I can be free
So how come the road never clears?
How come it's always so cold?
I guess there's no way out of here
Unless I reshape to your mold
Don't give up, it's a quarter past three
I'm just scared I'll die before I can be free

Paint by number
Obey all posted signs
Am I so out of touch
To wanna let my darkness shine?

Let's take it down another notch
Dim all your brightest ideas
Just a little snip to the crotch, now watch
That ought to set you at ease
Don't give up, it's a quarter past three
I'm just scared I'll die before I can be free

Paint by number
Obey all posted signs
Am I so out of touch
To wanna let my darkness shine?

I'm gonna let it shine!
C'mon J, let it shine

Don't give up, it's a quarter past three
I'm just scared I'll die before I can be free

Paint by number
Obey all posted signs
Am I so out of touch
To wanna let my darkness shine?
Oh, paint by number
Am I so out of touch
To wanna let my darkness shine?
(Here we go)

Nahoru You Call Me Baby

You call me baby
You call me baby

Did you ever feel so small
In the face of it all
That if you cut yourself in two
There'd be nothing left of you?
All the king's horses
And all the king's men
Couldn't get us back together again
It's an eight mile trek
Towards the back of the bus
Where there's an empty seat
Somebody saved for us, saying
Hey (hey) you (you), what do you do
When you're all stuck up
And your bones stick through?
It's the longest haul
An even longer fall
From the top of the line
To the place you crawl, saying...

You call me baby
I could believe in you now
It's only me trying to get by
In this city tonight
Because I know it's right, yeah
One day you will all wake up
From the American dream
American dream

Late at night you go to bed
Don't be so sure you're not dead
In the morning when you wake
Better check the space that you take up
All the king's horses
And all the king's men
Couldn't get us back together again
On a sick television
That's coughing up blood
And it stains every life, and it's starting
To flood, saying hey (hey) you (you)
What do you do when you're all stuck up
And your bones stick through?
It's an eight mile trek
Towards the back of the bus
Where all the hoes hang out
To be the first to touch, saying...

You call me baby
I could believe in you now
It's only me trying to get by
In this city tonight, yeah
Because I know it's right

Ever wonder what you are
Besides the sum of your sensation?
Black and starless night
You know my mind is under
Constant renovation, revelation
Leaving on the light
We are the children of an age
Of ancient, faceless information
Don't forget to write
You know I'd grow up
But I don't think I could stand the elevation
I'm afraid of heights
One day you will all wake up
From the American dream
American dream
What am I, yeah, yeah?
[scat]

All the king's horses
(You call me baby)
And all the king's men
Couldn't get us back together again
(You call me baby)
You call me baby
You call me baby
Do it my way
You call me baby
You call me baby
I could believe in you now
You call me baby

Nahoru Astroknot

My name is Michael, I ride my bicycle
Hard up the high hills
Of Charlemagne's driveway
I climb up the trellis
Lock fingers into lattice work
And watch as she takes off her shirt
And the war began on sacred ground
Funded by the green silk gown
She slips right into
And she needs to sleep
And he needs to wake up
He wanted to try the space that she takes up

This is Earth to astroknot
There's not a lot of hope for you tonight
And I believe the sun can stay
And rise you through the gray

Well I'd like to join the circus
And what did I do to deserve this
Hole in my life?
Well in the morning when you wake up
You'd better check the space you take up
Now isn't that nice? You're bound to your fate
And I won't be coming home tonight
I've hanged myself upstairs
Inside her bedroom closet
And she needs to sleep
And he needs to wake up
He wanted to try
The space that she takes up

This is Earth to astroknot
There's not a lot of hope for you tonight
And I believe the sun can stay
And rise you through this perfect day

In the final days they'll call us
Like monkeys from the forest
We've opened the gate
You're bound to your fate
And I might be a psycho
But I still ride my bicycle
And I won't be coming home tonight
I've hanged myself upstairs
Inside the bedroom closet
And she needs to sleep
And he needs to wake up, he wanted to try
The space that she takes up

This is Earth to astroknot
There's not a lot of hope for you tonight
And I believe the sun can stay
And rouse you through this perfect day

Nahoru Blood on the Blankets

Late at night I go to bed
Pull the blankets over my head
Thoughts of you get in my brain
Like a faucet drips into a drain
And I can't forget you, though I don't recall
When I ever met you if I met you at all
Are you an illusion? Say it ain't so
Excuse the intrusion, but
I've got no where else that I can go
Oh, there's blood on the blankets
And nobody's there, I sit and I stare
At shadows on the wall

Place a banana peel outside my door
I don't know how I feel
You seem to be sure
Though I don't believe it
I come when you call
Though I can perceive it
I slip and I fall
And I can't forget you
Though I don't recall
When I ever met you
If I met you at all
Are you an illusion? Say it ain't so
Excuse the intrusion, but
I've got nowhere else that I can go

Oh, there's blood on the blankets
And I'm scared
Someone's beside me
But nobody's there, I sit and I stare
At shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall

It's the long-awaited single
From the album unreleased
Artist deceased
You're the bastard undertaker
I'm a corpse beneath your knife
For all of my life, just a dead fish
I've got one wish
I wish you'd stop embalming me
With all your fluid fantasy

And I can't forget you
Though I don't recall
When I ever met you
If I met you at all
Are you an illusion? Say it ain't so
Excuse the intrusion
But I've got nowhere else that I can go

Oh, there's blood on the blankets and I'm scared
Someone's beside me
But nobody's there, I sit and I stare
At shadows on the wall
I said nobody's there, I sit and I stare
That's right, nobody's there, I sit and I stare
Said nobody's there, I sit and I stare
At shadows on the wall

Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall
Shadows on the wall

Nahoru Careless Kim

Careless Kim went for a swim
Where none could hear her shout
She got in to cool her skin
And never did get out
Day break
They drag the lake
And find no body, though
But she's there, I know
Somewhere below
The emerald undertow
And though I saw her going under
I could only watch in wonder

'Cause I don't swim so well
It's a miracle I'm mobile
At the Choir Girl Hotel
There are teardrops in the water
Another wish in the well
Why would I tell?
I'm just a peeping tom, I'm gonna go to Hell

It's late, I'm laughing
In my room
Though I don't get the joke
I grind my grin
Throat closes in
As chuckle turns to choke
Though I saw her going under
I could only watch in wonder

'Cause I don't swim so well
It's a miracle I'm mobile
At the Choir Girl Hotel
There are teardrops in the water
Another wish in the well
Why would I tell?
I'm just a peeping tom, I'm gonna go to Hell

So here I am
Your sleepless little lamb
The water makes me numb
But if six feet deep is
The only way to sleep
Then baby, here I come
And though I saw her going under
I could only watch in wonder

'Cause I don't swim so well
It's a miracle I'm mobile
At the Choir Girl Hotel
There are teardrops in the water
Another wish in the well
For someone who don't swim so well
Why would I tell?
I'm just a peeping tom, I'm gonna go to Hell

Nahoru Better State of Mind

You are the longest haul from home
Bones ache
And the light outside is getting low
Don't break down
In the underground they call your name
So you hide your eyes and hold your ears
And try to stay sane
You are not the one
To play God enough to say...

My heart bleeds for you
These bones are aching, too
Would that I could not find
A better state of my mind
State of my mind
Would that I could not find
A better state of mind

You are the deepest shade of dark I know
As I watch you from behind your eyes
And I see so much straight
As you walk your circle walk and whine
How you must be somewhere
Close to home
Oh you been there all the time
You are not the one
To play God enough to say

My heart bleeds for you
These bones are aching, too
Would that I could not find
A better state of my mind
State of mind
Would that I could not find
A better state of my mind
State of my mind

That kind of magic came today, hey
Sent all this tragedy away
And all this time I thought we'd know
Everything we need to grow

My heart bleeds for you
These bones are aching, too
Would that I could not find
A better state of my mind
Oh, would that I could not find
A better state of my mind

My heart bleeds for you
These bones are aching, too
Would that I could not find
A better state of my mind
A state of my mind
Whoah, my mind
State of mind

Nahoru Heart Attack

Seems so easy
Don't someone see it?
Small like wonder
Have I been dreaming?
These eyes are open
These ears can hear you
Though I've been screaming
You never hear me
And you go brick by brick
Walling me in
It's cold and it's dark
The air's getting thin
And I need my space
I wish you'd just relax
Blood pressure building
I feel it coming on

Heart attack, don't look back
Do you need someone to argue at?
You'll be fine
Love ain't always great
But hey, there's still time

Our lines have all been said
Our words have all been drawn
Like cracks across the base
Of all you've built us on
And you go brick by brick
Walling me in
It's cold and it's dark
The air's getting thin
And I need my space
I wish you'd just relax
Blood pressure building
I feel it coming on

Heart attack, don't look back
Do you need someone to argue at?
You'll be fine
Love ain't always great
But hey, there's still time

Yes, I've heard it all before, dear
And I've seen it all come down
Be prepared to take a fall, dear

Heart attack, don't look back
Do you need someone to argue at?
You'll be fine
Love ain't always great
But hey, there's still time

(There's still time)
Still time
(There's still time)
Still time
(There's still time)
Still time

Nahoru Old Grey Dog

This old grey dog was born to run
Now he's on the floor
Where he sleeps all day
But that's alright
'Cause he's dreaming of the days
When he could fly
This old grey dog has had his day
Now he'll have his night
Ah, but that's ok, that's alright
'Cause he's dreaming of the days
When he could fly

Down, boy
You're too old to be jumping for joy
Turn your eyes to me
So clouded they barely can see
That you've grown
Much older than dogs get to be
Come and take just one last walk with me

This old grey dog was born to run
Now he's on the floor
Where he sleeps all day
That's alright
Cause he's dreaming of the days
When he could fly

Down, boy
You're too old to be jumping for joy
Turn your eyes to me
So clouded they barely can see
That you've grown
(Even tie you)
Much older than dogs get to be
(Even tie you)
Come and take this one last walk with me
We could not even tie you up
(We could not even tie you up)

This is the place where the old ones go
When we know there is no choice
Don't be afraid to die alone
I made sure to bring your toys
You are the last I'd ever kill
Unless I believed what I believe will
Be the way for no more pain, a lesser evil
(Evil)
(Evil)
(Evil)

Now he sleeps all day
But that's alright
'Cause he's dreaming of the days
When he could fly

Down, boy
You're too old to be jumping for joy
Turn your eyes to me
So clouded they barely can see
That you've grown
(Could not even tie you)
Much older than dogs get to bev (Even tie you)
Come and take just one last walk with me
We could not even tie you up

(Even tie you)
(Even tie you)
(Even tie you)
(Even tie you)
(We could not even tie you)
(We could not even tie you)
(We could not even tie you)
(We could not even tie you)
We could not even tie you up

Nahoru Policeman

Remembering the day I met sweet mystery
A silent runaway, an effort to be free

I was a policeman
Who stumbled down the wrong path
Not a path where people go, oh no

Headlights in a haze, I must investigate
I've seen you in your car
I've got your license plate

Like a policeman
Who stumbled down the wrong path
Not a path where people go, oh no

U-V-U-4-4-5-laughing
So funny I could almost cry
You don't know I've been here laughing
Long before you passed me by
Well, I'll take you farther still, 'cause I know
I'll take you farther still
I'll take you farther still, 'cause I know
I'll take you farther
U-V-U-4-4-5-laughing
Spider webs and old store shoes
You don't know I've been here laughing
Long before you had to choose
Well, I'll take you farther still, yeah I know
I'll take you farther still
I'll take you farther still, 'cause I know
I'll take you farther, Father, farther, farther, Father

I was a policeman
Who stumbled down the wrong path
Not a path where people go, oh no

Just a policeman
Who stumbled down the wrong path
Not a path where people go, oh no

Just a policeman
Just a policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Just a policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Just a policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Just a policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Who stumbled down
Policeman
Who stumbled down
